CASPER CLIFFORD

Artist Statement

Perceptions of humanity through personal experiences and an increasing access to graphic and powerful information mold our reality. Through the versatile medium of clay, I aim to bring light to the way society presents itself, communicating my own perceptions to create a more pronounced dialogue on subjects that we often tend to gloss over in everyday life. In my work, sculptures become my canvas for expressing difficult subjects to articulate, and by creating a visual interpretation of the way I’ve made sense of it, my animals shine a blinding spotlight on the shortcomings and extremes that our society finds itself in. I aim to not only bring these to light, but to shake viewers into having the courage to question whether these exploitations of humanity are worth overlooking or if they should be focused on and dealt with.

I use the art of ceramics to bring together cohesive narratives to tell a story. Each piece brings its own perspective to the installation. My work derives from personal emotional experiences which are channeled through artistic expression, making every piece deeply personal. The art of ceramics has opened up a world for me that created not only a means of expression, but also a new outlook on life. My work is constantly evolving, bringing new perspectives of how I see myself and the world to life, acting as a therapeutic element to create evocative and sometimes chilling sculptures. Lately, I’ve been using themes of gore in my work to focus on the extremes of emotion. I’m influenced by music, specifically hard rock and metal music, and how each album is cohesive yet flows in different directions from song to song. I aim to bring that aspect to the physical installation, to create narratives which bring my inner worlds to life.
